Don’t want to go alone?
Tap Go together on any event and it opens in Hellohood, a free app for going to things with people nearby. You see who else is going, say hi in the chat before, and meet at the door instead of walking in alone. There’s also a city chat for Munich.
Munich for free
Munich has a reputation for being expensive, but some of the best things here cost nothing. The English Garden is bigger than Central Park. You can watch the river surfers at the Eisbach wave for free, and a free walking tour from Marienplatz covers the old town and its history in a couple of hours, for a tip.
People in Munich are friendly but can take time to open up. Doing something together is the fastest way past that. Saturday-morning parkrun in Westpark is free and timed, and the social part afterwards is half the point. Clubs and language groups meet through the week. If you’re new, picking one regular thing and going twice is how friendships start here.
Good to know in Munich
- In traditional beer gardens you may bring your own food. You only buy the drinks there.
- The Eisbach wave is at the southern edge of the English Garden, next to Haus der Kunst.
- parkrun is free; register once at parkrun.com and bring your barcode.
- On Sundays most shops are closed, so it’s the day for parks, tours and the lakes.
