Don’t want to go alone?
Tap Go together on any event and it opens in Hellohood, a free app for going to things with people nearby. You see who else is going, say hi in the chat before, and meet at the door instead of walking in alone. There’s also a city chat for Buenos Aires.
Buenos Aires for free
Buenos Aires runs late and runs social. Dinner at ten is normal, so most free evening things start around eight or nine, and nobody leaves early. Porteños are curious about newcomers, and language exchanges here are as much a night out as a lesson.
Mundo Lingo started in Buenos Aires and still fills bars in Palermo and Recoleta several nights a week. You get flag stickers for the languages you speak and simply walk up to people. There are also smaller conversation clubs over mate, English meetups and board-game nights. In the daytime, the tip-based walking tours of the centre and of Recoleta are the best way to understand the city’s story before you go exploring on your own.
Good to know in Buenos Aires
- On Sundays the San Telmo fair stretches along Calle Defensa. It’s free to wander, with tango in Plaza Dorrego.
- Events start late: an 8 pm meetup often only gets going at 9.
- Walking tours are tip-based. Bring cash in pesos for the guide.
- The SUBE card works on the subte and buses; you can’t pay the fare in cash.
